Certificate of Completion in Biblical Studies

The Certificate of Completion in Biblical Studies is a 30-credit hour certificate program designed to equip church lay leaders and Christian ministers with the necessary tools to serve God's people and congregants in the Greater Memphis area.  This certificate is awarded upon the completion of all course work and practical training sessions.  The combined courses and practical experiences will instruct students on the basic principles of the bible and expose them to the different areas of ministry.  The program will program students with a foundation in the biblical principles of Christian life as well as practical knowledge to serve in their churches and communities.

Objectives

  • Develop a comprehensive knowledge of the bible.
  • Develop a basic understanding of how to minister to the needs of individuals in different settings.
  • Strengthen their knowledge in the principles of Christian living.
  • Strengthen their ability to defend their faith.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • The prerequisite for this certificate is a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A total of 30 credit hours is required for the completion of this certificate.

Course Descriptions

Bible Survey Old Testament

This course is a complete overview of the old testament, including the historical background, major themes and settings.

Bible Survey New Testament

This course is a complete overview of the new testament, including the life, teachings, and redemptive work of Christ as well as the major themes and settings.

Church History I

This course is intended to introduce students to the history of the church which includes the basic principles and practices of Christian truth.

Church History II

This course is a continuation to the introduction of church history, including the basic principles and practices of Christian truth as well as the major developments of modern times.

Book of Romans

This course is a general study that introduces students to the content, structure, and background of the book.  The course also includes a discussion of the epistle's messages and major themes.

Apologetics

This course is a study of the Christian faith and a survey of the strategies and techniques one can use to defend his or her faith.

Ethics in Ministry

This course is design to teach students acceptable behavior from a moral, social, and biblical ethical standpoint.

Field Study

This course provides students with an opportunity to gain exposure and receive information about different areas of ministries (e.g., hospital visitation).

Practicum

This course is designed to give students an opportunity to gain practical experience in a supervised area of ministry/ministries.

Practical Counseling Methods

The course is designed to present the basic counseling skills.

Writing and Public Speaking Workshop

This workshop is to provide students with general tips on how to write and speak with clarity and precision.

Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

This session will train students on how to resuscitate/revive human lives and provide first-aid assistance to individuals in emergency situations.

Mental Health Training

The session is an 8-hour training course that teaches individuals how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.  Individuals who receive the training will be certified as a mental health first aid respondent.
